Ettore Sottsass était un designer de produits et un architecte qui a eu une énorme influence sur le design italien dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Sottsass est né à Innsbruck, en Autriche, et a déménagé avec sa famille en Italie pour pouvoir étudier l'architecture à l'Université polytechnique de Turin. En 1980, Sottsass a cofondé le groupe de design milanais Memphis avec ses collègues designers d'avant-garde Andrea Branzi, Alessandro Mendini, Martine Bedin et Michele de Lucchi. Visant à promouvoir un design radical, ils ont produit des meubles, des luminaires et des céramiques aux couleurs vives, géométriques et souvent anti-fonctionnels.
