The ‘home of the future’ has long intrigued designers and popular culture alike. Whether it was the dream of the fully mechanised home or the notion that technology might liberate us from home altogether, the domestic realm was a site of endless invention and speculation. But what happened to those visions? Are today’s smart homes the future that architects and designers once predicted, or has our idea of home proved resistant to real change?

Explores today’s home through the prism of yesterday’s imagination. Alongside original essays by leading voices in the field, this richly illustrated book features more than 200 colour images, organised in six thematic sections exploring privacy, the smart home, compact living, self-sufficiency, nomadic lifestyles and the idea of the home as an idyllic landscape. Ultimately this book proposes that we are already living in yesterday’s tomorrow, just not in the way anyone predicted

Son of Rand is my happy place online. Their curation is bold, warm, and playful - like design should be. It’s where I find pieces that make my space feel like me, and I always end up adding one or two extra things I didn’t even know I wanted."

Meet the Maker

Considered one of Denmark’s greatest and most influential architects, Mogens Lassen pioneered Danish Functionalism, taking his cues from Bauhaus sensibilities. His interior designs are a natural continuation of his architectural approach and add energy and atmosphere to everyday living spaces and tasks. From decorative objects to larger furniture designs, his designs delicately balance presence without drawing undue attention, finding their natural place in any space.Founded in 1989 by Sir Terence Conran, the museum is the place in the UK where the design industry, education and the public come together to change the way people think about themselves and the future.

The museum relocated to a spectacular modern landmark in Kensington in 2016, where it has welcomed over 2 million visitors since reopening and was awarded European Museum of the Year 2018.

Its collection, publishing, events, exhibitions, learning and digital programmes invite everyone to experience and reflect on the impact of design.
